Recycle Batteries
Batteries fall into two basic groups: dry cell batteries and lead acid batteries (wet-cell batteries). Lead acid batteries are typically for industrial uses like cars, forklifts, UPS units, and other battery back-up needs. Dry cell batteries are typically consumer batteries that are used to power flashlights, watches, laptops and power tools. There are many types of dry cell batteries including alkaline; carbon-zinc; zinc-air; nickel cadmium; lithium-ion; and nickel metal hydride. Some batteries are no longer made like mercury-containing batteries because they are harmful to the environment.
The method to recycle batteries changes depending on the underlying component parts and metallic content of the battery. Some require significant pre-processing and are subject to DOT transportation laws and EPA requirements and some are relatively easy to process. The laws governing battery recycling differ from state-to-state and there is an increasing trend towards regulating battery disposal.
